Family Visas in Corona Del Mar
A Focused Immigration Practice for Your Family’s Next Step
A family visa case requires more than proof of a qualifying relationship. We consider the petition, sponsorship requirements, immigration history, and appropriate route to permanent residence. Yekrangi & Associates is an Irvine-based immigration firm serving Corona del Mar families with guidance tailored to each person’s circumstances.
We focus exclusively on immigration law. In addition to family petitions, we handle employment and business immigration, naturalization, asylum, removal defense, and complex matters involving multiple applications. This focus helps us identify how a prior entry, work history, travel plan, or separate immigration concern may affect a family-based case.

Who Can Qualify for a Family Visa?
The correct petition category depends on the petitioner’s immigration status and relationship to the relative seeking a visa or green card. We review those facts before selecting a category because the classification affects visa availability and the next stage of the process.
Family-based classifications generally include:
- Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens: Spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents when the citizen petitioner is at least 21 years old. These classifications aren’t subject to annual numerical limits.
- Relatives in family preference categories: These include adult unmarried sons and daughters of citizen petitioners; spouses and unmarried children of green card holders; married sons and daughters of citizens; and siblings when the petitioner qualifies. These categories are numerically limited.
Green card holders may petition for a spouse or unmarried child. A sibling petition requires a citizen petitioner who’s at least 21. We determine the proper classification by reviewing both the family relationship and the petitioner’s status.
How the Family-Based Immigration Process Works
We generally begin with Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, which asks U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to recognize the qualifying relationship. Approval of the petition doesn’t grant permanent resident status, create permission to work, or guarantee that an immigrant visa will be issued.
The case then typically proceeds through admissibility review, sponsorship documentation, and one of two paths. Adjustment of status allows an eligible person to complete the permanent-residence process inside the United States. Consular processing involves applying for an immigrant visa through a U.S. consulate abroad.
Our preparation addresses the stages that apply to the case:
- Reviewing family history, past entries, current or prior status, work history, and travel plans
- Preparing Form I-130 and evidence of the qualifying relationship
- Addressing Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, in most cases
- Evaluating whether an exemption, alternative, or joint sponsor applies
- Preparing the appropriate adjustment of status or consular processing filings
- Preparing the applicant for the relevant immigration interview
Our first meetings also cover long-term goals and concerns beyond the immediate filing. A thorough review can reveal issues that should be addressed before we choose a strategy, particularly when a case involves a prior overstay, earlier application, international travel, or removal proceedings.
Corona Del Mar Cases & Santa Ana Immigration Agencies
Corona del Mar is a Newport Beach neighborhood in Orange County, California. Family visa matters for residents may involve the USCIS Santa Ana Field Office, while removal proceedings and related matters may go before the local Immigration Court. We work with these agencies daily and prepare each submission for the office or tribunal responsible for that stage.
USCIS adjudicates immigration benefit petitions and applications, while the immigration court handles removal cases and connected issues. A pending or prior court matter can change how a family petition fits into the broader strategy. We evaluate previous entries, immigration status, travel history, and supporting documents before determining the filing path.
Filing Costs & Sponsorship Requirements
Under the current USCIS fee schedule, the government filing fee for Form I-130 is $625 for an online filing and $675 for a paper filing. Government charges and legal fees are separate. The total depends on whether the case proceeds through adjustment of status or consular processing and which additional forms are required.
Most family-based cases also require Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, a legally enforceable document used to show that the intending immigrant has adequate support. We evaluate the applicable financial sponsorship requirements and whether a joint sponsor may be needed when the petitioner’s income doesn’t meet the threshold.
