Diversity Visa / Diversity Lottery
More commonly known as green card lottery, the Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) is a permanent government program. The Department of State conducts this lottery with the aim of diversifying the immigrant admission pool. It selects applicants to receive a U.S. Permanent Resident Card from countries with low immigrant admission numbers in the five years prior. In 2017, it was recorded that around 20 million people apply for the green card lottery each year—of that number, the Department of State selects 50,000 applicants.
